If a mattress ad says “Memory Foam” or “Latex” what does that really mean? Here is a perfect example of what we’re talking about. This was sent by email to all Sam’s Club Members on September 11, 2011. Here’s a screenshot taken directly from Sam’s Club website of the mattress for sale. Note that it’s being “marketed” as a Memory Foam mattress! There are plenty of “Latex” mattresses being marketed the very same way all over the internet and in print ads! The question is, what are you really buying if you choose one of these mattresses?

If you do a little "digging" on the Sam's site, you'll find the second picture below. It's not easy to find, but at least Sam's is being (somewhat) honest and making it available. Of the 12" total height of this bed, there is one (1) 1" layer of CHINESE Memory Foam mixed in with all the other layers. Most sellers of these type "Memory Foam" or "Latex" Mattresses aren't this honest. They advertise and sell a mattress set as a Memory Foam bed, no exploded diagram showing the layers, no further explanation, end of story! There are some mattresses out there with as little as 1/4" to 1/2" of Memory Foam/Latex still being marketed as "Memory Foam Beds" or "Latex Beds" to the unsuspecting public.
Here's a good way to look at this: A jewelry store has a ring with eleven cubic zirconias and one diamond. Would it be honest for them to advertise and sell that ring as a diamond ring, not disclosing the fact that it's less than 10% actual diamonds? It wouldn't be too long before they got into trouble with the Attorney General's Office. However, mattress stores have been practicing this type of deceptive advertising for years and years! Is it any wonder why mattress retailers have gotten a bad reputation?
Here's Sleepy's best Latex Mattress. It has 3" of Latex and I haven't been able to find out if it's Natural Latex or Synthetic. The guys in the Sleepy's Stores seem to "make it up" as they go. If I go to one Sleepy's Store I'm told one thing, another store - another story. So I don't know what to believe. The Internet price doesn't include shipping charges. I was pretty much quoted the identical pricing at every store. The price was $1,700 but because they liked me, it was their birthday, all the planets and stars were aligned or whatever reason they felt might work......they'd "let me have it" for $1,400. Really made me feel special!
Here's another "Truth in Advertising" Award Winner just waiting to happen. This was listed on Overstock.com under the category of "Latex Mattresses". Look at the description!
Here's a couple of Latex Mattresses from The Original Mattress Factory who we normally respect, but not in this case. Their Latex Mattresses are only 40% Natural Latex but they're telling you that this makes them somehow better than a 100% ALL Natural Latex Mattress. Sorry Original Mattress Factory, we've spent hundreds of hours researching the differences between Synthettic and Natural Latex and EVERYONE will tell you Natural Latex is better. Except of course, those stores who only offer Synthetic or Blended Latex......like you!
